I started my first business in my twenties as a freelance visual designer. At first, I took on smaller projects, but over time, my work evolved into more comprehensive brand design, where I helped shape the visual identities of growing businesses. Becoming an entrepreneur had always been my aspiration. The flexible schedule and full creative control felt like the perfect fit for me. During that time, I fully embraced the ‘boss babe’ mentality. The idea of empowerment resonated deeply, and for some reason, adopting that identity gave me the energy to keep hustling, no matter how challenging the work.
Running a business felt natural to me. I enjoyed the thrill of the unpredictability of entrepreneurship—you never know when the next big opportunity will come your way. At the same time, there’s little certainty or control over what happens next. Yet, despite the ups and downs, I’ve always been drawn to the excitement of it all. For 15 years, I watched my first business grow, with a steady stream of work. At times, it was exhilarating; at others, exhausting and discouraging. Losing out on bids I really wanted or handling difficult clients took a toll on me, both mentally and physically. Yet, I kept going. Through it all, I’m deeply grateful for the experience, the stability it provided, and the flexibility it later gave me when I became a mother to young children.
But as the years passed, I began to feel an increasing sense of disillusionment. It was as if motherhood had opened my heart in a way it never had before, awakening a deeper connection to purpose and passion that I could no longer ignore. This marked the beginning of a quest—one that would take me deep into my heart. Unknowingly, I was embarking on an adventure that would not only transform my business but also call for the dismantling of my entire life.
I know my journey is one of many. It reflects a much larger collective shift—from hustle to heart. More and more women are feeling the pull away from relentless hustle and toward something more meaningful—businesses that don’t just succeed on paper but feel deeply aligned with who we are. Business without heart isn’t just difficult to sustain; it also lacks the genuine connection and resonance needed to attract customers in today’s world. The ‘boss babe’ era once symbolized empowerment, but for many of us, it’s no longer enough.
Leaving Behind the Hustle (and More)
For some, discovering their passion early makes the path to fulfilling work feel clear and straightforward. But for me, it was a long and winding journey, intertwined with every aspect of my life. My purpose felt buried beneath a life I had carefully built—one that looked perfect on the surface, but it was someone else’s dream, not mine. When it came time to dismantle my career, everything else had to fall with it. I fought to keep parts of my life intact while carefully extracting the puzzle pieces that no longer fit, but that resistance made the journey far longer than it had to be. It was like having one foot on the brakes and the other on the gas, expecting to somehow move forward. Eventually, the pain of staying in my old life became unbearable enough for me to accept that it all needed to collapse. At that point, I no longer cared about the mess, the collateral damage, or the debilitating fear of leaping into the unknown. If I was going to have the slightest chance of living a purposeful life, I had to first burn down the existing one. And that’s exactly what I did. In one sweeping moment, I closed my first business, ended my marriage, and, most importantly, let go of the only version of myself I had known in search of a new one.
Finding Purpose (and More)
As painful and difficult as that time in my life was, it was the turning point that saved me from resigning myself to a life without meaning or purpose. More than that, it was the beginning of returning home to myself. I trusted the Universe to guide me once I found the courage to follow its call, and slowly but surely, it began to deliver. I started following the breadcrumb trails, doing the next right thing and continually moving forward despite fear and doubt. The trail eventually led me to the second business I would open: a space where I could share the very same healing essentials that nurtured my body and soul when I needed them most—a self-care sanctuary that would grow into something far more meaningful than just a store. It didn’t happen overnight, but something truly beautiful emerged after the smoke cleared. The messy pieces of my former life eventually rearranged into new and unfamiliar patterns. But at a closer look, I realized what had surfaced wasn’t new at all—it was my inner truth, and it had been there all along.
From Hustle to Heartfelt Work
The path from hustle to heartfelt work may be long and unpredictable, as mine was—or it could be more straightforward and effortless. What matters isn’t how you get there, but that you place your heart above everything else. True connection with your heart is where the real transformation begins. And as the world of work and business shifts from mere industriousness to embracing meaning and purpose, businesses without heart will inevitably be left behind.
Authenticity in Today’s Market
The world of business has changed dramatically since I first entered it. Small businesses have now flooded the scene, and because of social media, the sheer volume we’re exposed to is staggering. It has become much easier to start a business. With apps and software streamlining everything from marketing to operations, entrepreneurship is less daunting than it once was. And that’s a beautiful thing. We live in an empowering era where women are boldly following their dreams, leaving their 9-5s, and reclaiming ownership of their lives and happiness.
Yet, in an oversaturated market, standing out is harder than ever. This is where authenticity becomes the single most important ingredient in business. When you are truly aligned with your unique essence, purpose, and dreams, there is no one in the entire world who can replicate what you do. In this way, competition becomes irrelevant. Sure, there may be hundreds of other businesses offering the same services or products, but it’s your distinct flavor—how you serve, how you show up, and the heart you infuse into your work—that sets you apart. The right audience, the ones who resonate with you, will find you. And those who don’t? They’ll naturally drift away. And that’s exactly how it’s meant to be.
Embracing Your Unique Gifts
We were all created with unique personalities, interests, passions, and gifts. I believe each of us came into this world with a blueprint for our lives, already equipped with the tools to follow it. Yet, along the way, these gifts can become buried—lost beneath the conventions we adopt or the safe paths we choose. But they never disappear. They remain a part of us, sometimes turning into a quiet ache until we finally allow them to be expressed.
Whether you’re a hairstylist with a gift for making your clients feel truly seen and heard, or a coach who weaves holistic healing into her practice—these gifts are your signature. They are the unique essence you bring into the world, and they are meant to be shared. When you honor them, you not only find deeper fulfillment—you create ripples of impact that touch others in ways only you can.
Answering the Call of Your Heart
I never believed that we are here to merely exist—to find stable careers that pay the bills, retire, and call it a life. I believe that each of us has a calling, no matter how big or small it may seem. It could be to raise a family, or to impact thousands of people. It might be a quiet whisper that tugs at your heart every now and then, or a loud, undeniable pull you can’t ignore. I promise you, each one of us feels it in one way or another. And I believe life is far too short to ignore it.
When we start listening to that inner calling, amazing things happen. It may not always be easy or clear, but taking small steps toward what resonates with your heart opens doors you never knew existed. It’s through embracing this calling that we find our truest selves and the deep fulfillment that comes from living authentically. So take that first step, trust the process, and allow your passion to guide you toward the life you were always meant to live. The world needs your unique gifts. Don’t hold back.
Embracing the Shift from Hustle to Heart
Moving from hustle to heart is not only essential in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, but it's also crucial for our well-being and fulfillment. At first, it may feel challenging to step away from the culture of overwork and embrace a more surrendered, heart-centered approach. But it’s this very shift that will foster positive change—not just in our businesses, but in the collective culture. Every person who shows up with heart contributes to a broader movement towards a more heart-centered way of doing business.
Remember, the world doesn’t need just products or services—it needs the essence of who you are. So, step into your power, trust the unfolding journey, and continue moving forward with heart. Your story, your gifts, and your unique path are exactly what this world is waiting for.
