I’ve always felt like a modern woman with an ancient soul. My life feels like a paradox. Busy days on calls, emails, phone in hand, high heels on, headed from one thing to the next. But woven between those moments are rituals that feel like they belong to another time: meditation and mantras, a bath with essential oils, palo santo smoke filling the room.
For a long time, I thought these two sides of myself were contradictory. How could I be building a business in a world that moves so quickly, while still craving moments of stillness and intention? What I’m beginning to realize is that maybe this isn’t a contradiction at all. Maybe, like so many women today, I’m simply finding ways to remain tethered to my body and soul while living in a modern world.
The modern world moves so quickly, with so much information constantly demanding our attention. Because of this, remaining connected to myself has become a practice I consider non-negotiable.
I love technology. I love what it has made possible. I wouldn’t have been able to build my business without the tools that support me every day. But between emails, messages, and endless apps, I often find myself living more from my mind and less in my body.
Rituals are what bring me back. They reconnect me with the deeper, more ancient part of myself that I might otherwise lose touch with. And from that place comes some of my greatest creativity, intuition, and inspiration.
Rituals have become my bridge between these worlds. They allow me to move back and forth, to fully participate in the modern world I have chosen to build within, while staying connected to the deeper parts of myself that give that work meaning.
What are modern rituals?
I’ve come to see these moments of pause and intention as modern rituals. What makes them modern and what makes them rituals?
For me, a modern ritual is something deeply intentional, even sacred, but not dependent on a specific place, tradition, or set of rules. It is an invitation to create a moment of connection in the middle of everyday life. I believe a prayer can be just as powerful when whispered at your desk or in a Pilates studio as it is within the walls of a temple, shoes off, surrounded by sacred symbols.
My modern rituals include anointing my body with beautiful oils after a shower, spraying a perfume while setting an intention for the day, or simply sitting with a cup of tea and my thoughts. They are modern because they belong to the life I’m actually living. They are not trying to recreate another time. They don’t have to, because I’m not from another time. They feel more present, more approachable, and more authentic because they are woven into my everyday life.
And what I’ve found from over a decade of practicing these modern rituals is that they have shaped not only my personal life, but also the way I create and build. They have infused my work with a deeper sense of meaning, purpose, and even magic. My life feels richer, deeper—still modern, yet timeless.
Why modern women need rituals more than ever
From what I’ve witnessed, so many of us are feeling disconnected, even as we have more tools to connect than ever before.
Perhaps what we’ve come to call “connection” is sometimes only a surface-level version of it. We may have hundreds of contacts at our fingertips, but how deeply do we truly know one another? We may have endless content about self-awareness and personal growth, but how often do we slow down enough to actually witness and feel the most vulnerable parts of ourselves?
Modern women need rituals now more than ever because they give us a way to step away from our minds and return to our bodies, where creativity, intuition, and the deeper parts of ourselves can be found. This is why a scent, a song, or a delicious bite can move us so deeply. These moments allow our minds to quiet and our emotions to be felt. Science calls it the limbic system at work, the ancient part of our brain tied to emotion and memory. I just call it reconnecting with ourselves.
The beautiful thing is that we can cultivate these moments. A single pause, an intention whispered out loud, a scent truly savored, a small practice that you create and return to day after day. These are modern rituals.
Modern and timeless
Rituals can be both modern and timeless. In fact, holding both truths at the same time is how I try to move through the world.
I think as modern women, we are moving away from the idea that we have to choose one or the other: work or home, ambition or presence, the material world or the spiritual world, doing or being.
Modern rituals allow us to hold all of these parts of ourselves at once. They bring magic into our mundane moments and remind us that the sacred can exist within the lives we are already living.
